Reintegration Ceremony & Mega Sports Carnival at Batticaloa

With the invitation from Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Major General Chandana Rajaguru, Hon. Chandrasiri Gajadeera the Minister of Rehabilitation and Prisons Reform presided at the Reintegration Ceremony for a further group of 73 rehabilitated Ex-combatants, on 22nd January 2012 in Batticaloa. This was followed by a Mega Sports Carnival at the Veber Stadium in Batticaloa.

At the ceremony which commenced at 11:00 O’clock in the morning, this group of ex-combatants who had completed the rehabilitation program in accordance with Court Orders, were reunited with their families.

On this occasion, the Hon. Ministers and other guests handed over loans to 150 persons to enable them to start self-employment projects.

The musical group “Friends of Peace” consisting of talented ex-combatants undergoing rehabilitation, entertained the gathering to a musical performance.

Ex-combatants undergoing the rehabilitation at Welikanda & Kandakadu PARCs participated in the Mega Sports Carnival held at the Veber Stadium following the reintegration ceremony,

The sports event provided an excellent opportunity for youth to develop a healthy competitive spirit and display their talents. The occasion enabled them to further develop team spirit while teaching them to accept both victory and defeat with equanimity. During the festival the youth had the opportunity to hone their social skills in preparation for their imminent reintegration in to society.

The different ethnic communities were also able to interact and socialize informally on this occasion.

Rehabilitees, their parents, wives, children, sisters and brothers and nearly 1000 members of the public from the Eastern Province participated in the festival. It was heartwarming to observe the members of the public interacting enthusiastically with the ex-combatants and their families while the sports, games and musical performances kept them all enthralled.

Teams consisting of ex-combatants, some Sports teams in Batticaloa participated in Cricket, football, volleyball matches and other miscellaneous games organized as part of the Festival.

Special sports events were also organized on this occasion for differently-abled Ex-Combatants, children, sisters, brothers and parents.

The distinguished guests at the event included the Deputy Minister of Resettlement Hon.Vinayagamoorthy Muralidaran, the Secretary of the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reform Mr. A. Dissanayake , Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Major General Chandana Rajaguru, Bishop of Batticaloa Most Rev. Dr. Kingsley Swampillai, Chairman of the Rehabilitation Authority E.A. Samarasinghe, Senior Security Officers, Government Officials of the region as well a large gathering of local invitees.

The Hon. Ministers, the Secretary and CGR handed over Prizes and Certificates to winners.
