Livelihood Support for Rehabilitees

Bureau of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation (BCGR) through its follow up mechanism commonly known as SEWCORB (Socio Economic and Welfare Coordinating office for Rehabilitated Beneficiaries) with the purpose to provide assistance to improve the livelihood of reintegrated Ex-Combatants and also to handle their grievances launched another project Island wide, to uplift the living standards of reintegrated beneficiaries.

Towards this, a loan scheme was introduced under the scrutiny of the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms in collaboration with Ministry of Social Services. The loan mainly granted for a self-employment and to all beneficiaries. Under this programme, 59 disabled members and 1775 beneficiaries have benefitted to date.

Mr. Sinnathambi Somasundaram resident of Kantale, Trincomalee who was a rehabilitee of BCGR has opened up a Tinkering and Painting workshop of his own, with the financial support obtained through Bank of Ceylon, Kantale Branch and Ministry of Social Services.

Having joined the Protective Accommodation and Rehabilitation Centre in the year 2009, he underwent a complete rehabilitation process at Tamil Primary school in Vavuniya. Through skills developed in the process, inspired him to open up his own business from which he has succeeded well.

According to him, this project has given a new impetus to his social life. Being the bread winner, he supports his wife and Children with his earnings.

Attached herewith is a copy of the letter sent by the beneficiary to the Commissioner General, appreciating the support extended by the BCGR.

Yet another rehabilitee was privileged to receive the low interest micro financing facility.
