Visit of the Delegation from UN Counter Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (UN-CTED)

A Delegation from UN-CTED comprising Mr Christian Mahr the Senior Legal Officer and Mr. Alain Di Nicola from INTERPOL visited The Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms to learn and understand about Rehabilitation of ex combatants. The meeting was facilitated by Bureau of Commissioner General Rehabilitation on 29th October 2014 at Waters Edge. It was chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry along with senior civil and military officers of the Ministry and the institutions coming under the Ministry namely Department of Prisons, Rehabilitation of Persons, Properties and Industries Authority (REPPIA) & Bureau of Commissioner General Rehabilitation participating at the discussion

The heads of these institutions made presentations explaining the rehabilitation process of ex combatants, compensations and other benefits provided to war affected parties, national commitment towards an effective reconciliation process and post reintegration commitment and their rights.

A lively Q&A session was held to further clarify and to make explanations. Delegates raised questions with much interest and made positive comments on the rehabilitation process. They further stated that the rehabilitation process adapted in Sri Lanka could be used as a model in other countries and form a mechanism to share experience and learn. They also stated that the true picture of reconciliation in Sri Lanka is not communicated effectively world wide and that they would keep relevant authorities posted of the true picture at the Security Council.
