Private sector should hire former LTTE cadres

An international terrorism expert says the private sector should employ former LTTE cadres to ensure peace is sustained.

Rohan Gunaratna, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, said private sector employment opportunities would give former rebel combatants, now undergoing rehabilitation, viable alternative futures.

"This is something that needs serious consideration," Gunaratna said addressing a seminar at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce yesterday (23) organised by the Shippers’ Academy, Colombo.

"When a person ceases to be a terrorist, we need to engage that person. If we do not give them an economic opportunity, they might go back to terrorism."

Gunaratna said that around 11,500 former members of the LTTE are in custody, going through rehabilitation programmes learning new skills such as farming and information technology.
